Plain-language definition
Keeping your number when you change operator.
Technical definition
MNP means an MSISDN prefix no longer identifies the serving operator; SMSCs and gateways consult an MNP database or SRI-SM to route correctly.
Why it matters
Without MNP-aware routing, messages are misrouted or misbilled; firewalls also use MNP data to validate declared destinations.
