Glossary term

Sender-ID spoofing

Sending messages that appear to come from someone else, such as a bank.

Plain-language definition

Sending messages that appear to come from someone else, such as a bank.

Technical definition

Spoofing submits an unauthorised alphanumeric or numeric originator, or a look-alike variation, to impersonate a trusted sender; detection uses registries, variation matching and route correlation.

Why it matters

Spoofing enables smishing and social engineering; registry enforcement and handset verification defend against it.
