Glossary term

Grey route

A delivery path that bypasses the commercial terms an operator expects for commercial SMS.

Plain-language definition

A delivery path that bypasses the commercial terms an operator expects for commercial SMS.

Technical definition

Grey routes deliver A2P traffic via P2P interconnects, SIM boxes, unauthorised GTs or direct injection so that termination fees are avoided; they often alter sender IDs or content.

Why it matters

Grey routes are the main source of A2P revenue leakage and a common cause of altered or delayed OTPs.
