Application-to-Person

A2P

SMS sent by a business system to a person: one-time passwords, bank alerts, delivery notices and marketing.

Plain-language definition

SMS sent by a business system to a person: one-time passwords, bank alerts, delivery notices and marketing.

Technical definition

A2P traffic originates from an application (ESME) over SMPP or HTTP, or from an application-side SMSC, and terminates on a subscriber MSISDN. It is billed at commercial termination rates and is usually subject to sender-ID registration and content policy.

Why it matters

A2P is the revenue stream that grey routes and SIM boxes bypass, and the traffic class that most spam and smishing imitates.
