Plain-language definition
Fake verification traffic created so that someone in the delivery chain gets paid for messages nobody asked for.
Technical definition
AIT, also called SMS pumping, is generated by automated requests against an enterprise's sign-up or login flow using numbers from a range the fraudster profits from. Every OTP delivered earns a termination or revenue share; no account is ever created. Detection works on destination-range behaviour rather than message content.
Why it matters
AIT raises an operator's messaging revenue in the short term and destroys the category in the long term, because enterprises billed for fraudulent verification move to other channels.
